Thank You, Uncle Carroll, for all you and all the others did in our behalf. You came home from the war paralyzed and with a blood pressure condition that shortened your life, but you were my hero then – and you remain my hero today. We still love you – we speak of you often – and the pain of our separation from you never seems to quite go away. We are sustained by love, faith, and hope that someday, some way – we’ll be together again. God Bless You, Grand Hero of our Heroes! – As always, you will be especially close to us this weekend. It is the
VETERAN,
not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.
It is
the VETERAN,
not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.
It is
the VETERAN,
not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.
It is
the VETERAN,
not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is
the VETERAN,
not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is
the VETERAN,
not the politician,
who has given us the right to vote.
It is
the Soldier, Flyer, Marine, and Sailor
who died for us in combat
who gave us a life now that we aspire to live in peace.
It is 2016, time again to reflect upon our real heroes, our armed forces.
Count Your Blessings this Memorial Day,
Never take any of our military service veterans for granted,
And always remember to honor those veterans who have died to keep us safe.

Amen to what you said about the soldiers who gave their lives to buy our freedom. The Statue of Liberty, which I love, is actually a statue of opportunity — what it really represents is the freedom we have in this country to live as we please because of the men and women in our military who died defending our freedoms. In the same way, Jesus Christ was a soldier. People don’t usually think of Him in this way, but He gave His life up on the Cross in the same way a soldier sacrifices his life, so that we can live and be free forever, in Eternity.

I remember my cousin, Cpl. Frank C. Hoffman Jr, who graduated from San Jacinto High School and attended Rice Institute before joining the Marine Corps. He was killed in action on November 27, 1950 in Yudam-Ni at the Chosin Reservoir while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. His remains were never recovered.

Thanks for the great reminder, Bill. This is one of those days when I think deeply of college classmates who didn’t make it home. All those prayer opportunities can be put to good use. Thanks.
