Spahnie, Our Nation Turns Its Lonely Eyes….

September 22, 2017

Warren Spahn (1942-1965)
Hall of Fame Pitcher
665 MLB Starts
382 Complete Games

Some mysteries are simply too easy to solve. Take The Case of the Disappearing CG Stat.

In this era of 100 pitch count limits on starters – and an emphasis upon the need for pitchers to work the corners of the plate and run up pitch counts – who in the world is going to be around deep enough to even have a shot at a complete game?

To stay within the 100 pitch limitation for 9 full innings, a pitcher has to average no more than 11.1 pitches per inning to get there. And that breaks down further to no more than 3.0 pitches per out and 2.1 pitches per inning for hits and all other outcomes. Not much squeeze room for error in any variant form it takes from the possibilities described here.

Complete games? Forget about them. They are the dinosaurs of baseball in 2017. Unless the gene bank of rubber-arm guys like Warren Spahn start showing up strong enough to overwhelm the wisdom of baseball’s current pitching wizards, we are stuck with short term starters and a long spread of specialized relievers that inevitably follow.

Maybe we should change the title of starters to better describe what the first pitcher in every MLB game has become. He is the “opener” of a baseball activity that ultimately ends up in the hands of a “closer”.

Mystery solved.

Symmetry of role description improved.

Enjoyment of the game? Diminished.

2017 is Record Year for MLB Homers

September 20, 2017

Jerry Witte, 1951 Houston Buffs
Jeff Bagwell, 1B, 2001 Houston Astros
MMP (then Enron Field)
August 3, 2001

“When Alex Gordon hit a home run for the Royals in the eighth inning on Tuesday, it was the 5,694th home run of the season, breaking the record for most home runs in a single season set in 2000.” ~ And with that droll sentence for openers. writer Khadrice Rollins began this linked article on a moment in MLB history last night:

https://www.si.com/mlb/2017/09/19/most-home-runs-one-season-record

We have no specific tally on the number of homers that may have followed Gordon last night, but the Royals were playing in Toronto when his record-breaking pop exploded and there most probably was a homer or two that got launched elsewhere later, especially since there were some games going on from the west coast.

How long can something that happens at a record pace, one that pops in about a dozen games shy of season’s end, stay exciting? Yeah, we do get it, folks. The answer to that question forever shall remain a contextual one. It all depends on “who hit it” and “when” – in relation to our personal fan interests in the outcome of a game.

What about the impact of this home run record year?

The question we ought to be asking is what does the volume of home runs we see today mean to the game of baseball as an in-depth play of strategy? Or has it simply become the strategy of the game? If all you have to do to win is hit more home runs than your own rag-arm, short-time pitchers give up, than any of us can put on a baseball uniform, have them stencil “Earl Weaver Wannabe” on the back of the jersey and start managing today.

Two other thoughts: Some of us long-of-tooth former players and fans grew up when baseballs were far more rare, but a sight to behold when they left the park. I realize my bias here, but there was a visually-inspired biochemical high we got when a slugger like the late Jerry Witte used to hit with those high arching, Ruthian parabolic homers he struck in Buff Stadium – each far surpassing anything I ever saw Albert Pujols hit at Minute Maid Park. Let me try to find the words to separate the two images:

Pujols at MMP in 2005; The Brad Lidge Playoff Game Bomb. The ball left the park at night so fast you couldn’t even very well see or follow its high arching departure from MMP amidst the high walls of the park. It detonated a deadly silence that was mostly mental. From the “Oh, My God!” lip movements we saw later in videos of Andy Pettitte’s face as he watched from the Astros dugout to the stunned look on the face of Astros pitcher Brad Lidge and the rest of us fans it all boiled down to a psychological explosion of hope. In a nanosecond, we all had gone from the belief that we were about to clinch our first Astros pennant that night to – “OMG, now we have to go back to St. Louis and use our presumed World Series starter, Roy Oswalt, just to have any chance of actually getting there.” – What a letdown.

Jerry Witte at Buff Stadium in 1951: On a Few Sunday afternoon games. The Buffs were Texas League Champions in 1951 and they played like it. SABR’s current member Larry Miggins also was the left fielder on that club. He also hit 28 line drive homers for the ’51 Buffs, but his teammate, first baseman Jerry Witte, had 38 of those mostly rainbow-arching moon shots that just seemed to disappear into the wide-open summer skies. The balls took off with rocketry ascent. We can only imagine the g-force upon a baseball hit at that gravity-defiant angle with such total brute force. The ball transformed instantly into pea size as it ascended fifty times higher than the left field fence itself into the mixture of cotton candy clouds and summer blue canvas skies. The space-hurdling pea continued to change as it finally leveled to now covering more distance than altitude – and rapidly becoming more of a short-lived black dot. Before it could descend, the black dot would always disappear from our stadium view. If it ever came down, I’ve yet to meet another witness who saw it happen.

Bottom Line: As best I am able, I’ve just tried to share one the most sacred (and I do mean “sacred”) baseball memories of my younger days. And I wonder today: Do the home runs the kids see today still hold that special magic for them, as well. Or have they simply become something that happens so often that they are expected? And what is special today about baseball to our current younger generation – if and when they are actually watching what is happening on the field – and not staring at their electronic devices?

A Parting Random Thought. The first home runs were not helped by fences. There weren’t any fences until people started trying to contain the game so they could charge people for watching. But once they had fences up for a game somewhere in the 19th century, regardless of whether or not there was a an admission charge, we wonder what the first fans thought when they saw a batter hit one over the fence and then, we presume, leisurely ran home to score?

Did any of them think: “Is that legal? …. Do you get a free run for hitting the ball over the fence? …. Why can’t the fielder run over the fence and try to get the ball for a play on that arrogant runner?”

You never know what people may think.

Although the Indians and the Astros are the only two clubs left in mild to serious contention for the “HFA” through the World Series, the Astros still have an excellent chance to catch the Indians for “HFA” through the AL Playoffs if the space rocks can now sully forth with momentum from the Verlander-inspired AL WEST clinching on Sunday.

Astros Clinch AL West Behind Verlander

September 18, 2017

At last out Sunday, game-resting Jose Altuve ran onto the field to celebrate with his game-active teammates. His whole body language speaks loudly about the joy that comes from relief. “WE DID IT!” (This part of “IT”, at least.) Says the smile.

The Astros beat the Mariners, 7-1, to clinch 1st place in the 2017 AL West. George Springer and Justin Verlander had good reasons to thank each other for today’s win. Verlander won his 3rd start as an Astro – and Springer banged his 32nd HR in support. Where would the Astros be without these two guys, plus Altuve, Correa, and few others? I don’t know, but we wouldn’t be smiling today, not like we are.

Astros Manager A.J. Hinch hugs shortstop Carlos Correa, who caught the high pop fly that was the game’s last out. A.J.’s hug was for much more than his guy’s handling of a single pop fly.

Carlos Correa pauses for a nice interview by Julia Morales of AT&T Sportsnet. – Carlos also hit his 21st HR of the season to dead center today. It was his first long ball since the week prior to the All Star Game and the injury that took him out for so many weeks. His new tee-shirt was a popular post game change of jerseys for the Astros this happy Sunday in Houston.

ASTRO*NOTES. If you are a player, and you want a ring, you have be a member of the team that survives to win the World Series. Until then, every other win on the way is only for caps and tee shirts. And, frankly, that’s as it should be. In the big leagues, like in real life, you shouldn’t get a ring, a trophy, a watch or a car – just for showing up.

2017 AL WEST Champions is the Astros’ first division title in 16 years, the first since Astros icon and then manager Larry Dierker led the 2001 club to the title as Champions of the NL Central Division. To the best of our knowledge (:-)), Houston is the first double-league team to win division titles in both the NL Central and the AL West. We Astros fans owe a backhanded word of thanks to former Commissioner and newbie Hall of Famer Bud Selig for making it all possible.

Home Field Advantage Races. Sunday’s Houston 7-1 win over Seattle also was matched by Cleveland’s 2nd straight win over Kansas City by 3-2 on the same day. As a result, the Astros (91-58) remain 1.5 games behind the also new AL Central Division Champion Indians (93-57) for home field advantage throughout the AL Playoffs.

Hopefully, this table will show the race for home field advantage by league and overall for the World Series in an even easier way to see. It only includes those still possible playoff contenders who still have a snowball’s chance at the best scheduling rewards of the new system:

Astros Could Clinch ALW Title Today

September 17, 2017

HAPPY ASTROS CLINCHED 2nd WC SPOT in 2015 PLAYOFFS
In Arizona

********************

ASTRO*NOTES

The late night west coast win by the Angels over the Rangers kept the AL West division clinch # at “1” going into Sunday’s games. The Astros had dropped it to “1” on Saturday afternoon with their relief-staff challenged victory over the Mariners at MMP.

So much the better.

Now the boys have a chance to clinch live at the park today on the heels of Justin Verlander’s first home start for our space rock stars. Live clinches are always much more fun than the back-in type, which is what would have happened had the Rangers defeated the Angels last night. Had that been the reality, “the clinch” would have been table-cooled news by the time everybody arrived at MMP for the final game of the Mariner series. – And that never is half the fun.

Hot, in-the-moment active clinches are more powerful and, sometimes, even more precarious.

Remember 2015?

Joy Painted the Air Blue in 2015!

When the Astros clinched a second wild card playoff spot in 2015 with a win at Arizona on the last day of the season, the joy wave spread so quickly that some producer on the TV media coverage team forgot the possible dangers that might come from the use of a live wire telecast of the victory celebration in the Astros’ post-game clubhouse. Fortunately, some viewers had their VCR equipment cranked into use at home to assure the survival of a memorializing copy of what happens when unbridled joy bursts forth over the airways into an unprecedented bouquet of once powerful words we do not ordinarily get to hear on television during the family dinner hour.

The generally cruder expression for “mother lovers” flew through the clubhouse and out over the airways like a flock of birds in flight from the censoring walls that normally defend against their soaring presence in the skies above Norman Rockwell’s America.

Tribe Re-Boots

The Cleveland Indians used an 8-4 Saturday win over the Royals to raise their new consecutive game winning streak to “1”. – The new Indian streak, plus the Astros’ 8-6 win over the Mariners, keeps the Tribe’s lead in the competition with Houston for “home field advantage” throughout the AL Playoffs to 1.5 games.

Go-Get-‘Em-‘Stros! If you are going to earn it, now’s the time to do it!

And Welcome to Houston, Justin Verlander! – We love having you on our side!

Astros Mojo Showing Signs of a Crank Up

September 16, 2017

Charlie Morton
Houston Astros

********************

ASTRO*NOTES.

Charlie Morton

Ten-Year MLB veteran pitcher Charlie Morton is having his best season in 2017 as a member of the much beleaguered starting rotation of the Houston Astros. Morton’s six innings of 1-run on 5-hits to the Seattle Mariners came Friday night with a side order of 7-strikeouts and only 1-walk. Charlie’s big night pushed his 2017 season record further into the best-ever column as his W-L mark jumped to 12–7 and his ERA descended to 3.75. If the 6’5″ Morton is peaking, it is happening at just the right time. Friday’s win at MMP reduced the Astros’ AL West # to “2” and opened the door for a possible Saturday division crown clinch with a win over Seattle here in Houston and an Anaheim loss by the Angels to the Rangers later in the day.

Other Good News. The Cleveland Indians’ 4-3 loss at home to the Kansas City Royals on Friday night sealed the end of their new AL record game winning streak at 22, also dropping their lead over the Astros in the race for home field advantage in all rounds of the 2017 AL Playoffs to 1.5 games.

C’mon, Jose Altuve! Jose Altuve got a partial rest Friday, going 1 for 4 as a DH in a two-week pattern that has dropped his league-leading batting average from .368 to .347. In the meanwhile, the heated up bat of Avisail Garcia of the diminished Chicago White Sox has been doing a happy dance on pitched baseballs of late, moving his BA up to .334 – a mere .013 points back of our guy.

C’mon, Jose! Time to get your mojo working in high gear!

George “Showboat” Fisher: By Bill McCurdy

September 16, 2017

George “Showboat” Fisher

********************

George “Showboat” Fisher

Positions: Outfielder and Pinch Hitter

Bats: Left  • Throws: Right

5-10, 170 lb (178 cm, 77 kg)

Born: January 16, 1899 in Wesley, IA us

Died: May 15, 1994 (Aged 95-119d) in St. Cloud, MN

Buried: St. Benedict Parish Cemetery, Avon, MN

George “Showboat” Fisher played professional baseball for 14 consecutive seasons from 1919 through 1933. In a 138-game, 4 year spin (1923-1932) as a major league player, he batted a hot .335 for the Washington Senators (1923-24), the St. Louis Cardinals (1930), and the St. Louis Browns (1932). Most of the upside, however, was attributable to a .374 batting average he posted in 92 games for the Cardinals in 1932. His other three more limited MLB stints sum up as: Poor 2- Mediocre 1.

Fisher was 1 for 2 with a double and a strike out in two plate appearances for the Cardinals in their losing World Series run against the Philadelphia Athletics in 1930.

Like other reasonably good players in the deep reserve clause era, Fisher played as well as he could for as long as he could, and he did manage to establish himself as a steady high .300 BA hitter in the minor leagues for most of his career.

Without people like George Fisher keeping the 1920s roar of baseball going through the heart of the country during the Great Depression Era of the1930s, some of the guys who now retire early from baseball on unfulfilled promise money would instead be still living in the real world of scrambling for rent money.

Here’s a link to the career record of George “Showboat” Fisher.

Rangers Honor Beltre 3,000 Plus Hit Career

September 15, 2017

The Texas Rangers duly honored third baseman Adrian Beltre last weekend for his 3,000 hot passage season. In the process, one of our wonderful Pecan Park Eagle contributors, artist Michael Hogue, also was reflectively honored for that magnificent graphic he did of Beltre in the new company of all the other 3,000 hit club members to date.

Congratulations to Adrian Beltre, the Texas Rangers organization, and Michael Hogue – one and all – for a job well done!

That’s Mike Hogue embracing honoree Adrian Beltre in the center bottom photo of our lead graphic entry above. To be reminded of how dynamic the original Hogue work really was, check out this link to the original display of the graphic we featured in a pre-release column we did recently in The Pecan Park Eagle on Mike Hogue’s original work. If you guide your cursors over the image of each player in the larger version of our original Hogue column piece, shown here at this link, it will identify each of the members included in this rare group:

Dallas Morning News: Beltre Reaches 3,000 Hits

********************

(An Associated Press Report, September 9, 2017)

ARLINGTON, Texas — A congratulatory letter from Willie Mays and a video tribute including a request from George Brett were part of a pregame ceremony in which the Texas Rangers recognized Adrian Beltre for joining the 3,000-hit club.

The ceremony Friday night before the series opener against the New York Yankees included the reading of a letter from Mays that started, “This is Willie here. Welcome to the club.” Mays wrote that he knows it’s not an easy accomplishment and told Beltre to “keep at it” because everybody loves to watch him hit.

A video shown during the ceremony included Brett, Pedro Martinez, Paul Molitor, David Ortiz, Robinson Cano, Felix Hernandez and Nelson Cruz congratulating Beltre on becoming the 31st player, and first from the Dominican Republic, to get 3,000 hits.

“When you get 3,153 (hits), retire, and five years after you retire, I will see you in Cooperstown,” said Brett, a Hall of Famer whose 3,154 hits are the most by a third baseman.

Beltre got his 3,000th hit with a double July 30 at home against Baltimore. The third baseman has 3,035 career hits, though he hasn’t played since straining his left hamstring Aug. 31 and could miss the rest of the regular season for wild card-hopeful Texas.

“This is a little bittersweet,” Beltre said. “I’m humbled and grateful for the honor, but it would be nicer if I could go back out and play. I know it’s supposed to be at least four weeks. It’s going a little slow for my liking. I want to be optimistic, but I don’t know that I can say when I will play again.”

The Rangers presented Beltre with an ATV that was driven on the field by teammate Elvis Andrus, as well as one of the bases from the July 30 game that was signed by the entire team. There also was a proclamation from Arlington’s mayor declaring “Adrian Beltre Day” and a plaque presented on behalf of the Dominican Republic recognizing him for his achievements.

“When you have 3,000 hits every day is Adrian Beltre day,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister said when addressing the crowd.

There’s Still Time to Rise Above Mediocrity

September 15, 2017

Rogelio Armenteros
RHP, Fresno Grizzlies
8-1, 2.16 ERA

ASTRO*NOTES

Magic #. The 5-1 Astros series rubber game win over the Angels in Anaheim on Thursday has reduce the long-held Houston magic claim check on the AL West title to a measly 3. Any combination of Astro wins or Angel losses totally 3 now finally gives the long-awaited keys to the division crown to Houston.

Home Field Advantage. Houston still holds a 5-game lead over Boston in any meeting they may have in the AL Playoffs, but Cleveland continues to hold a 2.5 game lead over the Astros for home field advantage is any playoff series with the space rockers – or anyone else, for that matter. How could they not? The Tribe never loses. Last night they rallied late to beat KC, 3-2, in 10 as they expanded their AL winning streak record to 22 games. – An Upcoming Cleveland Foe Warning: Say goodbye to your scalps as you enter the ballpark where your next game with the Indians is scheduled to be played. There will not be time for goodbyes once the next massacre gets off to its inevitably whooping and hollering start.

Random Thoughts. … Brad Peacock (11-2, 2.98) was again brilliant, but like the little Dutch boy in the fairy tale, he cannot plug all the leaking holes in the Astros’ starter and relief pitching dike. …. Hope the Astro fates do not now hinge on a sensational catch in center field that only Jake Marisnick could have made. …. Wonder how A.J. Hinch feels now about all the second-guessing that’s inspired by a great team that falls into a September slump? …. I still don’t know why we lost Jeb Lowrie again after getting him back in 2015 for a second time. …. Does Dallas Keuchel ever stop to think that the growing length of his beard may be slowing his speed pitches down to more hittable acceleration levels? …. Are bench coaches sometimes capable of topical conversations that go beyond baseball? …. Jose Altuve, George Springer, and Carlos Correa all seem to be hitting walls together at just the wrong time. What’s the remedy? Rest? Or keep cranking til their engines start – or their arms and legs fall off? …. Gotta get these guys pumped again and soon. We have to build a powerful momentum, asap, and it’s not going to happen around the Astros Holy Three – without their loose as a goose participation. …. Don’t envy Hinch his job in the least. Anything he decides to do can either work for the better – or for the worse. …. Either way, the offense for now is still sucking air. …. The club has been playing mediocre baseball since the All Star Game.  From the start of the 2017 2nd half on July 14, the Astros have a record of 28 wins and 29 losses. Do that long enough and it’s easy to become the thing your club record says you are. …. And the word is mediocre. …. If possible, this is the time for the club to prove they are not …. just another flash in the pan burned out nobody special mediocre club.

How About Trying The Cuban Pitcher Down in Fresno? Take a look at the year that young Rogelio Armenteros has been having at Corpus Christi, but especially at Fresno? Wouldn’t this be a good time to see if his stuff is superior to the short-term adjustment leaning curve of major league batters as the Astros head into the playoffs with a starting rotation that contains more holes than a block of Swiss cheese? Our good friend/talent scout/ baseball minded Dr. Don Matlosz of Fresno State University may be able to bring us up to speed on this question or even point us to others among the Fresno Grizzlies who might be able to help the Astros in their hour of greatest need.

Here’s the statistical link to the page on Rogelio Armenteros:

Note to Dr. Matlosz of Fresno State University: If you have a comment on Rogelio Armenteros or any other pitcher at Fresno that you may have recommended who might be capable of stepping into this critical late season role, please drop me an e-mail and I will publish it here as an addendum scouting report by you to The Pecan Park Eagle on this pitching needs question:
