RED ALERT! – RED ALERT! – RED ALERT!

Anne Tucker of The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is also a big, big Houston Astros National League fan who has decided to take the bull by the horns for the rest of us similarly minded folk.

Rather than sit around worrying that Commissioner Bud Selig is going to twist new club-owner-in-waiting Jim Crane’s arm into moving the franchise to the American League West as a condition of his approval, Anne Tucker has started an organization that exists solely to make sure that this Selig-bargain never happens.

SaveOurStros.Org speaks for all of us who want to see our Astros remain a member of the National League, no matter who owns the operating rights to the franchise at any given moment in baseball time.

If you click on the link at the bottom of this page, you will see the letter that Anne has most respectfully written to Commissioner Selig to put forth our case for leaving our ‘Stros exactly where they are on the big league baseball map.

All I might have added to the letter was my own strong belief that the American League’s DH rule destroys the true spirit and integrity of the real game, but Anne was wise to leave that part out of the mix. After all, we are dealing with a man who is a strong proponent of things like the DH rule and using the All Star Game outcome determine home field advantage in the World Series. The less we say that sounds off-topic to those kinds of ears, the better.

What follows is Anne Tucker’s appeal to other Astros fans that feel as she does. If you agree with Anne, please sign the petition that is included as part of the package she will be sending to Bud Selig:

To all my baseball friends:

I am passionately opposed to the Astros being pushed into the American League. I sent a letter to Bud Selig expressing my reasons against the move. Please go on the web-site below and sign the petition that we want to present to Mr. Selig soon. Also, please pass this on to your baseball friends.

We think the deadline may be the middle of November so do this now. This will not put your email on any list and we are not soliciting money at this time. This is our first step. We are looking into bill boards in Houston if we can do it fast.

 Thanks for you help.

 Anne Tucker

Click the following link to see Anne’s letter to Bud Selig and the petition that awaits your signature, if you agree with fans like Anne Tucker and yours truly. The Houston Astros are a National League, real baseball franchise with no room for side tracks into the carnival game that contains the (DH) designated hitter.

Pat, I do not know how you fit in the Mulvihill family, But Jack Mulvihill, son of Willie and Ruby in st.Louis was my Dad’s best friend while growing up.in St. Louis. They bled Cardinal Red before there were Astros. Unfortunately my computer system winn not allow me to vote on-line. Security or something?
Anyway, I am sure that some people in your family, John or Mike wil
Remember my family? When Mike played American Legion Ball We used to get the clippings.

I Have been a National league fan since birth and agree you about the Astros staying in the National League. Can you see a rivalry with the Chicago White Sox to come about…too unreal…

Well, if it was wise for her to leave out the DH stuff because it would fall on deaf ears, then the same is doubly true for the part about Milwaukee moving back to the AL. That is something Selig will never do. He’s wanted an NL team in Milwaukee since the Braves left town, and has always considered Milwaukee a “National League town”.

It was good she mentioned the Buffs, but she shoule have included that the affiliation with the Cardinals went back to 1928,

Warts and all, I signed it.

  3. Mark Wernick's avatar Mark Wernick Says:

Houston’s franchise, except for a brief stint as a St. Louis Browns affiliate, always was strongly National League. Here’s a list of some of the pros from the Cardinals and Cubs who have played here for the Houston Buffs since the early 20th century: Dizzy Dean, Enos Slaughter, Jeff Tesreau, Rube Foster, Jim Bottomley, Eddie Dyer, Del Gainer, Pepper Martin, Joe Medwick, Johnny Keane, Herman Franks, Walter Alston, Bob Scheffing, Johnny Antonelli, Harry “The Cat” Brecheen, Mort and Walker Cooper, Al Cucinello, Paul Dean, Ted Wilks, Johnny Hopp, Howie Krist, Howie Pollet, Johnny Wyrostek, Danny Murtaugh, Alpha Brazle, Emil Verban, Solly Hemus, Don Bollweg, Cloyd Boyer, Mel McGaha, Whitey Kurowski, Larry Miggins, Lou Novikoff, Wally Moon, Vern Rapp, Rip Repulski, Vinegar Bend Mizell, Earl Weaver, John McNamara, Larry Jackson, Luis Arroyo, Bob Boyd, Don Blasingame, Ken Boyer, Bobby Tiefenauer, Barney Schultz, Hal Smith, Ruben Amaro, Pidge Browne, Marty Kutyna, Duke Carmel, Charlie James, Von McDaniel, Karl Spooner, Harry Walker, Rod Kanehl, Roy Smalley, John Tsitouris, Rube Walker, Mel Wright, Dick Bertell, Jim Brewer, Sammy Drake, Moe Drabowsky, Dick Ellsworth, Jerry Kindall, Howie Koplitz, Al Lary, Ron Santo, Joe Schaffernoth, Billy Williams, Moe Thacker, Dave Giusti, J.C. Hartman, Aaron Pointer, Bud Zipfel, Wally Wolf, Jim Campbell, and on and on. And the NL major league franchise goes all the way back to 1962, so they certainly have a seniority claim on the NL over the Padres, Nationals, Diamondbacks, Marlins, and Rockies. In fact, It would make way more sense to move the Nationals back into the AL, where the vast preponderance of AL history resides for Washington franchises. That wouldn’t solve the geographical problem, but moving the Rockies or Diamonbacks would. Neither team has been in the league as long as my son has been alive, and his generation would be lost to the Houston franchise if it moves to the AL. This is a very unpopular idea in Houston. Has the citizenry here been polled? Has Bud Selig run focus groups to assess the economic viability of this idea to the City of Houston or to the American League? Mark

    Bill-
If Crane does indeed purchase the Astros (which is not a done deal right now) there is nothing Selig can do to move the Astros to the AL. It is in the MLB bylaws. No owner can be forced to move his/her franchise to another league. All Crane has to do is say no. If Selig is indeed trying to blackmail Crane to move to the AL by refusing the team purchase to go through, the logical thing to do in my mind, is fans to file a class action lawsuit against Selig, MLB Enterprizes and Crane if he caves to Selig. The nostalgia route will not work with these bottomfeeders. The only thing these people understand if something threatens what’s in their wallets.
Many letters have already been written by fans to Crane and McLane and here is McLane’s answer which is a bold face lie CYA letter:

    ————————————————————————————-
“I appreciate you sharing these notes and please pass on my thanks to all of those to took time to express their concerns. They are obviously terrific fans of the Houston Astros and that means a great deal to me. Regretfully, this is beyond my control or the control of Jim Crane and the team. If it does happen, change is a big part of life and we all have to make adjustments.”

  6. ElevateBaseball (@ElevateBaseball)'s avatar ElevateBaseball (@ElevateBaseball) Says:

Per James’ wallet thing… it’s been proposed that we work to influence the Astros’ strongest corporate partners into helping us all convey our pain… that, by identifying a limited number (10?) of the seemingly-most-prominent ones, and beginning to promote a boycott of Astros fans doing business with them.
That is to say, it is easier and arguably more effective to gain fans’ cooperation to simply choose a competitor’s product or service over an Astros partner than it is to create a letter writing campaign that, no matter what, will always be played by the recipients (McLane, Selig or Crane) as minimal for their own reasons. We just need a basic way of determining who we’re boycotting, then a website with an easily-remembered-URL that can publicize who’s on our list.

  7. John Burroughs's avatar John Burroughs Says:

The petition is going to need more than just a few hundred votes. There needs to be an organization of fan volunteers. They need to go to sporting venues (pro, college, amatuer), trade card shows, sporting goods stores, flea markets, and special events with the petition. They need to get the message out on internet, on radio, and put ads or letters to the editor in the papers.
